How Far are We Going to Retreat?

Begin writes about the controversy over who should control the Suez Canal area. He argues that David Ben-Gurion made a major mistake when overnight changing Israel’s position, meaning that Israel would retreat. Unlike Britain and France, Israel will be threatened by Nasser if Egypt gets control of the Suez Canal region. In regards to the idea of the UNO police force be stationed there, Begin argues that the land will end up in Nasser’s hands. If Egypt returns to the Suez Canal, Begin is confident that they will rebuild their army. Additionally, should Israel retreat from Suez Canal area, it will invite the international world to demand Israel to also retreat from the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza, and eventually, Jerusalem.

Stop the Retreat Before January 10th’ Begin Urges

Begin addresses the Knesset regarding the claim that the Prime Minister told the military correspondent of the ‘New York Times’ that Israel would agree to give Gaza over to a High Commissioner chosen by the UN. This counters what the Government had previously said in front of the world. The Government had said that Israel will never agree to a foreign power occupying any liberated part of Land of Israel. Begin demands the Knesset to stop any retreat before January 10.

The Honour of a Nation

Begin argues that “Israel must learn that a nation that surrenders its honor will lose more than honor.” He first gives an example of Poland holding onto its honor against Russia in a joint Russian-Polish announcement. Begin continues to provide examples of Israel’s unstable relationship with both Russia and Turkey. In both instances, Russia and Turkey recalled their ambassadors from Israel and Israel chose to not recall theirs from Russia and Turkey. It is crucial for Israel to recall their ambassadors from countries that recall theirs from Israel.

America Has Handed Africa Over to the Kremlin

Begin presents the international political zig-zag occurring between U.S., France, Britain, and Russia. Begin explains his confusion towards the different world powers unanimously agreeing that Israel should return land it gained from Egypt. He shares the irony of the U.S. policy being twofold—both anti-communism and anti-colonialism. Ultimately, the U.S. actions assist Russia. Because of the strong relationship between Russia and Egypt, the U.S. helped Nasser become a conqueror. Begin explains that Russia’s power will continue to grow and concludes that Israel must be courageous.

Stop the Retreat!

Begin expresses his opposition in the Government’s decision to withdraw forces from the Sinai Peninsula. He explains the mistakes and hypocritical actions of the Government. He argues that panic is the worst advisor for a military struggle. Begin concludes that despite international pressure, the Government must retreat from its retreat.
