Days of Danger–and Hope

Begin shares his concern regarding how the Cold War could affect Israel. He first references to the Korean War and the U.S. involvement. He explains that if the Korean War became a world war, Jews would be fighting one another and Israel’s existence would be at stake. Begin talks about the British involvement and relationship with the U.S. Since the U.S. may need British help in Korea, it might also be seen that the U.S. needs help in the Middle East. Begin shifts to talking about England’s politics towards Israel, and mentions Germans and the Holocaust. England provides arms to the Arab resistance because they want the north of the Suez Canal. He then talks about mistakes the Government is making regarding this situation. In the last part, which is cut out, Begin shares his hope that just how the country was liberated from the British Mandate, he also hopes that soon the country will be liberated from Mapai’s “oppression and exploitation.”

New Year Message from Menachem Begin

Begin sent a New Year greetings to the Jabotinisky Movement. In this greeting he first discusses Herut’s achievements during the past year. First, he mentions how because of Herut, the Government relocated to Jerusalem and it did not allow 100,000 Arabs into Israel. Additionally, Begin mentions that Herut stands firm on wanting to control the entire Homeland. Begin shifts to talk about Herut’s successful settlement building. He concludes saying that the country realizes Mapai’s inability to lead, and thus, it will soon be Herut’s turn to lead Israel.

Menachem Begin’s Report

Begin speaks at Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s annual Yahrzeit ceremony in New York. He first mentions that earth was brought from the graves of Theodor Herzl, Joseph Trumpeldor, Sarah Aronson, and the graves of Jabotinsky’s students who served in the Underground. Begin mentions the different Israeli cities where those people are buried. Begin then apologizes that the earth from David Raziel’s grave could not be brought. He continues to say that he also could not bring earth from brethren who were massacred. Begin shifts to share that Jabotinisky taught to love and fight for the nation of Israel. Additionally, Jabotinsky taught to liberate the Homeland in its entirety, which Begin mentions has yet to be fulfilled. Once that is complete, Begin says that Jabotinsky’s wish to be buried in the Homeland will be fulfilled. Begin concludes with comparing Jabotinsky as the father and teacher, and himself as a son and student.

He Taught Israel to be Free

Begin focuses on Jabotinsky’s crucial role in creating the Jewish State. He specifically explains how Jabotinsky strengthened the concept of the Hebrew revolt. First, Jabotinsky realized and argued for liquidation of the Diaspora. Then he was passionate about the importance of both spiritual and physical return to the Jewish Homeland. Lastly, Jabotinsky believed in the necessity for a Hebrew army, the Haganah. Begin explains throughout each of these points, Jabotinsky was alone, “surrounded and assaulted from all sides.” Begin concludes with arguing that Jabotinsky changed the way future Jewish generations will talk about Jewish history.

Bullets from Bevin

Begin expresses his disagreement regarding the Government asking Britain for heavy arm supplies. He starts with an example of when Britain befriended General Smuts, who was a leading rebel in South Africa when the Queen wanted to conquer the South African republics. In South Africa, Britain wanted to conquer land, while in the Land of Israel, Britain wanted to destroy a nation. Begin discusses that during the War of Independence, Britain provided weapons to the Arab countries that tried to exterminate Israel. Accepting arms from Britain will help the British with their political agenda regarding Israel. Their strategic purposes threaten Israel’s existence.
